Online Exhibition 2004

Talented young designers revealed
A campaign to engage greater voter participation, an inclusive transport interchange, an environmentally friendly bamboo water bottle and stamps bearing a powerful message about genetic modification are among the winning designs in RSA Design Directions 2003-04. Continuing its 80 year tradition of highlighting the best of new British and European design talent, the RSA's new design scheme, RSA Design Directions, attracted 1,600 entries and has made awards worth around £100,000. RSA Design Directions aims to encourage emerging young designers to engage with the broader social and environmental context in which they will work.

Ceramic Futures  This project offered two options: one concerned with the exploration of ceramic material for students from any discipline while the other asked students to explore new forms and decoration using either new techniques or old ones re-innovated

Interactive Media  Students were asked to create an iTV service as a central access point for all government related issues. The purpose of the service was to bring Government closer to the population and to encourage the population to understand and engage with Government

Less Crime through Design  This project was an opportunity for students from a number of disciplines to examine, from their perspective, how the problem of anti-social and criminal behaviour in hospital A&E departments could be addressed through a design led approach

Medical Products  Students were asked to consider proposals for oral healthcare products that tackle the ‘silent epidemic’ of poor oral health

Packaging  This project focused on the packaging of bottled drinking water used by people ‘on the move’ and invited solutions that specifically addressed the need to minimise the environmental impact of the prolific use of these containers

Postage Stamps  Students were asked to consider the stamp as a campaigning vehicle as a way of penetrating the national consciousness and present designs that addressed a particular concern or issue

Re-innovation  This project asked students to explore the notions and rituals of ‘public bathing’ in the widest sense and either to re-innovate an existing product or service to meet it or to develop an entirely new one

Transport  This project focused on a transport interchange facility between several modes at an airport, with significant account needing to be taken of environmental sustainability in terms of social inclusion, effects on the environment and usability

Voting by Design  Within the context of falling voter numbers and a general lack of engagement with the democratic process, this project asked students across the disciplines to look at ways of improving and enlivening both the electoral process and voter access using a design led approach. Their challenge was to improve all areas of voter access, thinking of access in the broadest possible terms – from intellectual to physical – as a way of improving participation

Inclusive Worlds  Students were given a number of areas/scenarios and asked to submit designs that took into account the greatest number of potential users. These areas included, among others,  domestic and public environments and how they can be made more inclusive and more accessible; how interfaces that limit exclusion can be better designed to accommodate those normally excluded, by providing greater access and also facilitating greater independence and autonomy; fashion and clothing, and how smart wearables can change lives

Engineering in the Olympics  Student engineers and engineering-orientated designers from different disciplines were asked to locate and tackle sports infrastructure-associated design opportunities, and to demonstrate how their engineering education and design skills can develop fresh, insightful solutions for existing or emerging situations. The design challenges explored could cover any aspect associated with major sporting events – from environment to stadia design, floodlighting to fencing, seating to security, scoreboards to springboards, timing to track design

Fashion  Choosing a country and researching its history, geography and culture – selecting the best of the past and reinventing it for the future – was the starting point for students to culminate this research into in a collection that would reflect their vision and style, and that would show and sell in their shop.

Fashion Fabrics  Students were asked to take as inspiration a contemporary designer (e.g. Eley Kishimoto, Marni, Marc Jacobs, Dries van Noten, Junya Watanabe) and to create a collection of fabrics for men or women, for either a spring/summer or autumn/winter season

Furnishing Textiles  Based on one of the following themes: Global Spirit (inspired by the 21st century Nomad) or The Comfort Zone (inspired by a desire for personal retreat) students were asked to produce a design collection for a living space
